Old Hilary is the owner of an American downtown pawn shop that he rules in a highly idiosyncratic way. While appearing implacable and sometimes even unfair to the outside world, he believes that too much compassion would not help his customers, only harm them. Hilary knows a great deal about suffering from the many people who frequent his place. One of them little Lizzie Shaw, who takes refuge in Hilary's pawnshop for fear of Danny O'Keefe, whom she once loved. Here she believes to be safe from outside threats, here she can escape into dreams and illusions. Furthermore, Lizzie helps opening the eyes of Hilary so that he can see the world in a better light.
